Macintosh Printing
Hello all.  I know this might not be the right place but I'm having a hard
time adjusting to this new telecommunications program and the macintosh
enviroment.  But in the desktop pubishing area I'm getting the hang of
pagemaker just fine.  I have this school project to make a magazine and I
wanted to knock the boots (not the La meaning) off this teacher.  I think
it will come out great, but even better if printed in color.  Now I know
that kind of printing costs alot and I don't have that kind of money and
this is only a high school project.  I was wondering if an AMUG member
with a color printer would be willing for a small sum or cost let me print
out this short publication when it is done.  It's due May 23 so its not
like I need it tomarrow.  I don't procrastinate(sp).  Thank you for your
time.  Please send me email if you can help it would be easier for me to
read.  That's one thing I've mastered.

AMUG Class on Saturday, April 27.

AMUG is giving a class next saturday from 9-12 AM, at the Pyle
Recreation Center, on Southern Ave. near Rural Road in Tempe.  The
Center is the second building to the West of Rural.

The class is for beginners, but in addition to some trouble shooting
comments we well provide some information on System 7.  We will use a
very well done Stack from Apple to describe System 7, and may have a
surprise or two.

The Class is free to AMUG members.  Non members may join at the class.
The dues are $30.00 per year and include a monthly magazine and access
to nearly 200 disks of shareware and freeware and many more
advantages.

Echomac problems

It has been obvious that for about two weeks there has been a severe change
in the message traffic particularly with Echomac.  We will go a day or two with
no traffic, then boom, here will come the messages in big bunches.

Now, as before when this has happened, there has been not a single peep from
the local Sysops.

Don't you think it would be nice to tell users what is going on.  Or if it is
unknown, at least mention the problem so users will at least know that perhaps
someone is looking into it.

Now I'll settle back and get ready for the flames I get for picking on the poor
old suffering Sysops.  Well, flame ahead, I'm not buying that routine, since
it is not like I'm asking for a great deal.

This isn't US Mail Dorman.... as it comes in you get it, and if one of
the BBS's it passes through goes down or does not find a window to connect
in, then its delayed. There is no announcement for delayed Echo mail
because its all automated. Since you are on several times a day you probably
know when it comes in better than I.

You are probably one of the few users we have that actually reads it. That
echo is so huge I gave up long ago. 200 messages or more a day in one echo is
more than I can do and run everything else as well.

I hope you understand I'm not trying to put you off, but there really is no
way to track echomail and make sure all 300 nodes are delivering on time.

S work. I have a 386sx clone at work, and I thought it would be a
good idea to buy SoftPC for my Mac IIcx at home. Man, the SoftPC emulator
runs extremely slow. I ran a cpu speed program under the emulator, and it
showed up at 0.5 MHz! SoftPC runs in CGA mode, unless you purchase an
additional module that will emulate an EGA mode. My recommendation to you,

3 dimension imaging
Hello, I have a question for anyone interested.  Has anyone tried to do
anything like the following - scan in a topographical map (USGS type)
image, then render it into a 3-D view of the terrain?  I heard about a new
program called Contours - Pro that may do the rendering, but I'm not sure
what I should think about for a workable combination of software and
hardware to accomplish this task.  Or am I completely out in left field?

I agree with April, you should look into the digital information from
USGS. I haven't the time (or the money for the storage I think I might
need) right now to get into it but I find the subject a fascinating area.

April, do you have any idea how much storage a DEM might take. Are we
talking 10, 20, 40 Megabytes or really 100's of Megs ?

What sort of programs does your husband use for this ? I have noticed that
Wingz has the capability to do 3d charting and I thought this program may
have possibilities for people who can't afford specialized systems.

??? My impression is that SoftPC runs a *bit* faster then that. Don't forget,
the AT module also speeds things up lots.

Another possibility is that you were running a graphics-intensive program.
SoftPC
is not too hot on graphics, and the latest version claims to run many times
faster then the previous one. Have you made sure that your version is the
latest?

For those that purchased modems from AMUG in the last few meetings:

If you are having trouble connecting to line 1 (926-4026),
please call Michael Bean. The modems we recieved had version 1.0
of the ROM installed and it failed to connect to the DSUSR 9600
baud modem properly.

We have ROM version 1.01 in stock and can install it for you.
If you are having difficulty connecting on AMUG Preferred line
#1 just give me a call at 892-5454.

microsoft word and it is just gibberish! Help! Please! also have had
trouble accessing AMUG Prefered.  When Modem dials answer comes back no

I don't know how much memory it would take for a DEM file to run; it would
depend on the complexity of the terrain. None of the literature I have
specifies how much memory is required, although the shell programs say
they will run on a 1- meg machine. Wingz is one, MacGrid and Contour Pro
all have these capabilities.

AMUG Hosts:

On June 20, 1991, AMUG will host Opcode,  Odesta and DeltaPoint. Great MIDI
products such as Max, and MidiPlay will be provided by Opcode. Odesta will
demonstrate

DeltaPoint
will show their new page layout program Taste and more. This meeting will be
at 7:00PM in Phoenix at the Howard Johnson Hotel, located at University and
the Freeway. Get a Taste of AMUG and BE THERE! Our beginners meeting starts
at 6 PM so come early.

System 7.0...
Apple Computer will allow User Groups to redistribute System 7.0 under our
license
agreement. So expect us to have this 12 disk set after the May developer
conference.
This set should run $20 from AMUG and many new system features will be
available.
We are planning to have a System 7.0 book available as an option as well for
$8.00. Look for training on System 7.0 at future meetings!

AMUG's Training Expo... Huge Success!
 On May 4, 1991 many great trainers gathered and taught twelve classes for AMUG
members at the Howard Johnsons Plaza hotel. Each class was 2 hours
and over 480 seats were registered for instruction. Subjects that were the most
popular included HyperCard, PageMaker, Illustrator 3.0 and Word. Each of these
classes had 70 - 50 attendees. Other subjects taught include Excel, Beginners,
Intermediate, Works, Networks, FileMaker Pro and Hard Disk Recovery. Everyone
that attended really had a good experience and the only resonding theme we heard
over and over was when is the next one.

As a result of the enthusiasm AMUG will attempt to provide an all day seminar
with the same quality of instruction every six months. If you would like to
help please call me. In the future, I would love to see a weekend Macintosh
boot camp with training and cocktails on Friday, all day classes on Saturday
with a pool party that evening and discounted hotel accommodations for those
desiring to stay close to the action. If you have other great ideas let me know.

Do a search for Pack.  The program is Packit II, but it might be
abreviated in some funny way, so use as few letters as possible.  I would
look in the Nifty Utilities Section to start.

However, if you have Stuffit 1.5.1 or Stuffit Classic (or Deluxe, I
think), they will all unpack .pit files.  In Stuffit 1.5.1, pull down the
"Other" menu and select unpack.  It will give you a file dialog box to
find the file you want to unpack.  Since there are so few Packit files
(with the .pit suffix) around, I would not bother to download Packit II.

access to toll-free telephone upgrade assistance.

o   AVAILABILITY/ORDERING INFORMATION
Orders for all System 7 products can be placed starting May 13.  In order to
make Personal Upgrade Kits available before the intro date, we have developed

special program to allow each reseller to place ONE order before May 13.

This program was designed to ship available Personal Upgrade Kits to Resellers/

   Orders placed after May 2 will be filled as additional Personal Upgrade
    Kits become available; however these orders will likely be delivered after

   Quantity and allocation:  There are no quantity limits or restrictions for
    ordering.  However, Apple does not guarantee receipt of any number of units

Upgrade Information for Apple Hard Disks

Copyright 1991, Apple Computer, Inc.

All Apple internal and external hard disks are compatible with all Macintosh
CPUs that have a SCSI interface.

The version of Apple HD SC Setup version 2.0.4 that ships with all hard disks
is compatible with System 7, but version 7.0 is the recommended version.

The upgrade to version 7.0 is free, and the file can be found in this
folder, as well as on the System 7 Group Upgrade Kit CD.

Some hard disks that have been formatted with older versions of HD SC Setup
may
require an updated driver in order to function with Virtual Memory.  IT IS NOT
NECESSARY TO REFORMAT THE DRIVE.  If the Memory control panel indicates the
drive needs updating, follow the instructions in the System 7 Personal Upgrade
Kit to use HD SC Setup to update the driver.

  updated 2/14/91, Use to tame those unruly INITs with HeapTool! Adjusts system
heap automatically as needed. If you're experiencing frequent system crashes,

You can get it by calling USR at 1-708-982-5092 the sysop board by modem. If

Perhaps you are running the old version of Telefinder that did not crashmail

Yes, Word should be working with 6.0.7.  Do you get crashes only with Word?
 One thing to try is to find the file "Word Settings (4)" in your System Folder
and toss it into the trash.  If you have done a lot of special configurations
(menu changes etc.) you might want to make a backup copy of this file.  When
you next start Word, a "fresh" Word Settings file will be automatically created.
 These sometimes get corrupted, which is why I suggest this approach to check
out.

Further ideas depend on what you system setup is, i.e. kind of Mac, how much
memory, and whether you are using MultiFinder.  If you only have one MEG of
RAM, or are using MultiFinder, you might be having a memory problem.  If so,
things to try:

   Select "Preferences" (from the Edit menu, I think).  If "Keep Program in
Memory" or Keep Document in Memory is checked, then uncheck it and restart Word.

   Check the General Control Panel to see if the Cache may be set too high,
thus using up to much of your RAM.  If it may be, turn it off or lower it.

   If you are using MultiFinder, do a "Get Info" on the icon of Word, and check
the Amount of memory Word is set for.  You can change the amount currently set.
 Normally you might want to increase this amount.  However, depending on how
you work you might want to decrease the amount.  Try it both ways.

   Also if you are using MultiFinder and any large DAs, INITs or Cdevs, or a
"lot of them," you may wish to increase your System Heap.  Get the file
HeapTool,
version 1.4, or Bootman version 1.1.  Read the instructions and go from there.

If nothing works or applies here, then you may need to start replacing the Word
program itself with a fresh copy.  Then you might need to reinstall your System
Software.

Anyhow, some things to try.  Good luck

You might try the utility called "BAD" (version 1.1 is the latest, I think).
 Bad is an INIT.  When a floppy fails initialization, you will get a mesaage
with a choice of reinserting to let BAD have a go at it.  It attempts to Mark
out bad blocks and complete an initialization.

My memory can't be sure, but I seem to recall saving a disk with it that other
utilities failed to save.

Of course with diskettes being so cheap (relatively speaking, of course) you
may be wiser to just to dump the disk.  I personnally mark such disks as having
bad blocks and will not put anything on it I would worry too much about losing.

Don't worry about the static unless it lasts more than 10 seconds. If it does
not go away, it may be sitting to close to another Mac or electrical device.

Are you by any chance using AutoMenus?  If you are, for some odd reason
the new version of AytoMenus causes problems with word 4.0-- But the odd
thing is that it only happens on some machines.  I talked to its author,
Mike Conrad, last night and he told me he's fixed it but the new version
won't be released until he has it fully 7.0 compatable.

Can somebody help me to understand what BinHex is and how it works? The
idea I've gotten from what little I've read about it here and there, is
that it is a method of storing or transmiting Mac files (with resources)
across non-Mac platforms (not supporting resources). Is this correct?  I'd
appreciate anybody with some isight into this subject.

etc.) will only allow messages which contain the first 128 ASCII
characters, in lines that are limited to 80 characters in length.
BINHEX will convert (or unconvert) any Mac file into that format, so that
it can be easily transmitted on those e-mail networks.

May Meeting...

Main Meeting:
The main meeting had a new look.  Mike O'Boyle made some great new signs using
BannerMania and then had them laminated. They really looked fantastic.  Now,
no one will have difficulty finding the Raffle, Best of..., Membership, and
Insurance tables. Thanks, Mike!

Alison Ellis of Microsoft began the meeting with her demo of the new Excel
Version
3.  This new version has some great new features.  Although it completely
supports
System 7, Alison was frustrated with the beta version that Paul had on his
drive.
 Even though it did not allow her to show Excel at its best, we did get a sample
of most of the features, such as the new Toolbar that makes Excel much easier
to use.  Some of the other new features include: Balloon help, Best fit column
width, Consolidate, Outline, and new 3-D Charts.  There is an upgrade charge
of $129 (or $50 if you purchased your copy since December 7).
Lynn Drasnin, Corporate Account Manager for Frame Technology, presented
FrameMaker
3.0 (Frame).  Frame is a Desktop Publishing program that is both powerful and
easy to use.  According to Lynn, although Frame is extremely powerful, even
novices to Desktop Publishing can begin creating a document in just a few
minutes.
 Templates make it easy to get started, and changes to the templates allow you
to end with a unique document. The program is said to be outstanding for
long-document
publishing.  FrameMaker sells for $995.  Lynn and Brian Cody (Application
Engineer
for Frame Technology) passed out $100 rebate slips.  They also offered demo
versions of Frame to anyone at the meeting who took the time to fill out a
request
card.

We had a buy/sell followed by some announcements by Mike Bean.  He told us about
a new CD ROM from Time Magazine and Warner New Media that is available to AMUG
members for $29.  It is called "Desert Storm The War in the Persian Gulf."
The CD includes reports, photos, audio recordings, etc.

Paul Hauber, Area Manager for Word Perfect, got everyone's attention by
distributing
bags of M&M's.  If the presentation and the product were not enough to keep
us awake, the sugar rush would have been.  As it turned out, there was no need
for a sugar rush;  Word Perfect 2.0 's features were impressive enough to keep
us quite interested.

I had always thought of Word Perfect as a DOS product.  I was surprised to see
how completely Mac interfaced it was.  It also has some impressive features
that are very easy to use.  There are border options that allow border styles,
colors, types, and text to be changed.  Draw and Paint tools are included in
the program.  Besides a Dictionary and Thesaurus, a find feature will  find
words spelled phonetically and offer alternatives.  Word Perfect even offers
synonyms.  There is a Macro Editor, a replicate feature (that creates three
dimensional effects), and a sort feature.  Word Perfect is doing its best to
get its product into the Mac community.  There was a great offer for anyone
who wanted to upgrade from other Word Perfect versions, Microsoft Word or other
word processors.  Since the offer ended at the end of May, I won't tease you
with it.  Too bad if you missed the meeting  it was a great offer.

 Jeff Geertsen's demo of the May 1991 AMUG disks provided the evening's grand
finale. The disks included some great public domain software. Quill is a DA
that opens files written using many different word processors.  This comes in
very handy when you take the time to download a file only to get that famous
message "this file cannot be opened the application is busy or missing."  At
this point you realize that you don't have the necessary word processor   now
you have Quill. There were some True Type fonts to add to your System 7, and
a Disk Label Maker DA.  Jeff apologized for not having added any games to this
month's disks, but promised to find at least one or two for next month. As
always,
his demo was a lot of fun and his choices offered something for everyone.  Jeff,
thanks again for all your time and effort.  It is definitely appreciated!

Beginners' Meeting:
Dorman Bullard (of AMUG Tempe fame) introduced System 7 to those attending the
Beginners meeting.  About 35 people (most new to AMUG)  attended the meeting.
 Everyone had a great time learning about System 7's new features.  According
to a smiling Dorman, "There were a lot of questions and almost as many answers."

This is the first time that the Beginner's meeting got a jump on the Main
Meeting.
 System 7 comes to the Main meeting in June.  Don't miss it!

Best Of...:
System 7 took all of Lea Bromley's attention.  She sold sixty-eight packs and
several copies of  The Macintosh Bible Guide to System 7.  The book sold for
$10, the System disks were $18, and the packs cost $25.  Meanwhile, Mike Bromley
was busy selling the Best Of ... disks.  For the second month in a row Laser
Fonts VII was the hottest seller.

Membership:
Alex Podressoff took some time away from disk copying to help Alan Heflich at
the Membership Table.  Fourteen people joined AMUG and one member joined AMUG
Preferred at this month's meeting.  At the time of the meeting, 30 people had
joined AMUG by mail this month (12 new members and 18 renewals).

AMUG North goes on Hiatus:
AMUG North has lost its home.  Dorothy and Jerry have been searching for another
location for the monthly meeting but to no avail.  For this reason, AMUG North
will not be meeting this summer.  Hopefully meetings will resume in the Fall.
If you know of a location in the Paradise Valley area that  would be available,
please call Dorothy McKay at 993-8415 or Jerry Harthun at 493-5010.  Your help
will be greatly appreciated.

MAC Training EXPO:
"That class was fantastic."  "I always work with Illustrator and I still learned
something."  "I wish I brought a tape recorder to the Excel class, it was
great."
 "He just solved a problem for me in two minutes that I have been working on
for months."  These were just a few comments that I over heard as classes let
out.  It seems that everyone felt that the time and money invested in AMUG's
"MAC Training EXPO"  was well spent.

There were three sessions  (10:00 A.M., 12:30 P.M., and 3:00 P.M.) with four
classes per session.  Class size ranged from 11 to 57 with Illustrator (57)
coming in first and Pagemaker (54) running a close second. Networks was the
smallest class with 11 people attending.

Greg Peterson of Computer Support Professionals, Inc.  took on the tremendous
responsibility  of EXPO Coordinator.  Greg was the man responsible for
recruiting
the instructors and seeing that the classes began and ended according to
schedule.
 The EXPO ran smoothly and the instructors did great jobs.  For example,  I
sat in on the Microsoft Excel class.  I had to see for myself how someone could
make a class on a stylesheet program enjoyable (enlightening yes, enjoyable?).
  With his sense of humor; ability to answer any question and solve any problem
presented; and thorough understanding of a Mac User's inherent aversion to
Manuals,
Tom did the impossible  he made the Excel class not only  enlightening and
enjoyable
but FUN!

Worldwide Product Marketing and the Apple User Group Connection have organized

 USER GROUP SYSTEM SOFTWARE LICENSING
User Groups who have signed the software distribution licensing agreement are
authorized to distribute System 7 to their members.  These User Groups will
receive System 7 disks directly from the Software Licensing department
beginning May 13.  User Groups are not authorized to distribute nor
will they be receiving HyperCard 2.1, which is now a Claris product.

In addition, all User Groups will receive one set of System 7.0 manuals as a
reference for the group.  For members that want HyperCard 2.1, System 7.0
manuals and access to Apple's 800# telephone support, it is recommended that
they purchase a Personal Upgrade Kit.

Group Upgrade Kits are recommended for sites with 6 or more Macintosh
computers.  The System 7.0 software can be distributed to an unlimited number
of users, however HyperCard 2.1 may only be distributed to 20 users.  To
upgrade additional users, please contact Claris Customer Relations at (408)

 USER GROUP SYSTEM 7 CONTEST
The User Group Connection is implementing a User Group System 7 Awareness
Contest.  Prizes (Macintosh LC and a StyleWriter) will go to User Groups who

Hey all!
  Well, here's the start of a whole bunch o' questions, I'm sure.
I've been using all the beta releases of 7.0, and I've never had a
compatability problem with either Giffer or StuffIt.  I just installed the
finished 7.0, and both of the above-mentioned programs seem to have a wee
problem with the Open File dialog box.  I'm not getting a list of my GIF
pictures in the Giffer directory, and Stuffit refuses to show me those
files as well.

   Any ideas?

   Oh yeah, and while I'm at it, is anyone else having a problem with
speed?  The Beta 4 release with the Cache extension ran much faster than
the final release.   I have a IIcx with 8 meg physical RAM, quantum 105
and an Apple 24-bit card.

    If this is as fast as the final release gets, I'm going back to Beta
4!!!

Hank, sorry this took so long. My husband spoke to the tech rep at
Rockware software and they said that the U.S.G.S. DEM would run on a 1-meg
machine, they also said that the DEM's currently available are not very
accurate at this time sinc they were digitized from existing maps but they
understood that USGS is working on a new digital program with a higher
degree of accuracy but did not know when they would become available. The
primary purpose of the existing models are for general use like education,
rather than technical applications like mining or engineering. I think
this area of mapping is in its infantcy and will be much better in the
near future. Hope this anwsers your questions.

I didn't notice a speed decrease in going from bety 4 to the release version.
But, perhaps I just didn't notice.

One possibility.  Do you by chance have the show folder size option on (in the
"Views" control panel).  I understand that slows things down by having to
recalculate
folder sizes whenever a new window is opened.

Apple maintains that all models of the Mac from the Plus on will run System
7 if they have at least 2 (2.5?) megs of RAM. Certain models cannot run Virtual
Memory (the Plus, the SE, the Classic, the Mac II and LC without a special
chip).
Certain other Macs cannot run in "32-bit" mode without a special thrid-party
INIT. I only know that the SE/30 is numbered as one of these. The Plus, SE,
& Classic cannot run 32-bit mode at all as their CPU only addresses 24 bits.


In other words, your SI will run System 7, it will run Virtual Memory, but I
can't remember whether it will run 32-bit mode (do you have more than 8 megs
of RAM and/or more than 14 megs of Hard DIsk free? If not, then it doesn't
matter
anyways...)

Over the years the AMUG Newsletter has always needed articles and tidbits of
information. In order to establish a program to enhance the desire to review
software for AMUG News the following program is in place:

Apple should have put graphics co-processor in their machines since most of
the programs in the Mac is relies heavily on graphics. As for Quickdraw, I think
Apple will stick to it's stand. I was quite surprised when Apple introduced
a QuickDraw laser printer. I guess QuickDraw is here to stay.
    As for Display PostScript, I witnessed a couple of NeXT machines in action
some time ago and boy, they're quite good although it's CPU intensive.

distributing them free. I called they and they actually quoted the prices to
me even though I didn't ask for them..... Anyone got a copy I can test drive?

Most of the time, I could just ignore the error message as the whole computer
will not bulge after the message apppears. A fatal error of some sort. Anyway,
I've installed PseudoFPU and most things seems to work fine now.

They didn't distribute it as they haven't got it. The documentation for Z
version.

Don't expect them to give you system 7.0 and also provide phone support as they
are handing this task over to the dealers. We are told not to give system 7.0
away as it is a headche support wise.

Try the MacBoard. They seem to have copies of it but don't put it on your system
or you will find lots of incompatibilities. There is a compatibility list in
the Techincal folder.

The best idea is to download the various indexes which appear in the File
folders,
and examine them at your leisure. On your next log-on you can then grab what
you want with maximum efficiency. Another idea is to the the normal Finder Get
Info command under the File menu. Often there's a heap of stuff under this to
assist you.

To put a graphics co-processor in as standard shou;d've been a design decision
made about 6 years ago (when they first introduced the Mac II) I think it might
be too late now ... cos the installed software base expects and uses Quickdraw
and the buffer pages.
Display Postscript isn't the answer. It provides you with true WYSIWYG, but
is even more inefficient than Quickdraw in a speed and display sense. The only
reason it works acceptable on the NEXT machines is the 68040 processor. Nobody
in their right mind would use display postscript for speedy graphics (in arcade
games etc) .. cos it renders too slowly.
You're probably right about Quickdraw being here to stay in the Mac range ...
but what about the new RISC machine Apple's supposed to be developing. It'd
be surprising if they stayed with Quickdraw on that.

It'll probably take you a bit of download time, but Ross Sheehy of the AUSOM
BBS has received permission to put the full System 7 down on his hard disk for
download purposes. Apple OK'd it and Ross has compressed the files.

The original NEXT machine had a 68030 CPU and ran Display Postscript. The
current
NEXT box is a 68040 beast ... and still runs Display Postscript.
For my money Display Postscript is still an inefficient graphics language. (As
bad as Quickdraw)

I recall hearing something about RISC machines which Apple is going to come
out. But that was months (if not years) ago. If I'm not mistaken, Apple said

The BBS is getting very busy now... Everyone is looking for System 7.0 and it
is actually on another BBS - AUSOM (Apple Users Soc. Of Melbourne) but I haven't
put it on this BBS... Too slow downloading and too much incompatibilities. Still
waiting for the System 7.0 I ordered. I will send you the AMUG reg. when I get
a few more forms.

RISC is about the only way they can go after they adopt the '040 CPU - cos
that's
so close to RISC in many aspects that they may as well make the switch. Their
problem is that the Mac OS is currently written for conventional CPU's in the
680x0 family ... and if they go to RISC they'll need a complete rewrite PLUS
some form of 680x0 emulation.
The big question is whether they opt for the Motorola 88000 series of RISC
processors
... or the Intel series.
Many sources now say that the upcoming System 8 (probably due for release in
3 years time!!) will be a purely RISC OS. If this is true then the RISC machines
will be released at the same time ... and they won't be Macintoshes by any
stretch
of the imagination.

SmartCom II v3.2 for Sale

Here's an item that didn't reach the auction table due to lack of time.  This
is Hayes' SmartCom II for the Macintosh.  The version number is 3.2, which is
the current version.  I've been promised a free update to version 3.3 due out
last of June, early July.  I'f I get it, I will pass it along.  SmartCom II
has a graphical/icon interface, is easy to use and got a 5 Mice rating (the
Highest) from MacUser who said:

"Smartcom II balances power and ease of use. Its capable of unattended operation
and has a powerful command language. The fastest screen updating available can
keep up even at  9,600 bps. The large-screen buffer can easily be archived."

Complete with a manual and a registration card.  Since I just paid $25 for an

The SE was the biggest selling Apple Computer (the SE with 20Meg HD and 1
meg RAM) and they pratically abandon it.  The SE/30 upgrade is kinda
stupid though, you could sell your SE and then buy a new SE/30 for about
the same price as the upgrade.  The SE should have continued.  They could
have made the Macintosh SE Classic, that would have been a better choice.
They could have just made the cost lower and change the parts a little.
Oh well.  BTW, I have an SE and that's why I have hated Apple for awhile
now.  Also, does anyone know if a program that is Classic Compatible is
compatible with the SE (that is if the disk is 800k and the SE is on
current system software)?

ASU Macintosh Special Interest Group
A Macintosh Special Interest Group is forming for students at ASU!
-
- The first meeting has been scheduled for Monday, September 16 at 7:00
p.m. in room 222 (Mohave room) in the Memorial Union.
-
- This will be an on-campus organization and will benefit from the support
available in AMUG. There seems to be a lot of macintosh interest at ASU
and an AMUG SIG would be an ideal resource for students to expand their
knowledge.

- I will be posting up flyers around campus before the fall semester
starts to announce the SIG and the first meeting.  The main thrust of this
meeting will be to generate interest and provide initial direction for the
SIG.  To help achieve this end, we  have tentatively scheduled a speaker
from AMUG to talk to students about AMUG in general-  ( Let students know
we exist!) Also a special topic will  be covered in the first meeting.  I
hope the ASU MAC SIG will attract students from all disciplines, from
music to architecture to engineering.  We already have a good start as the
bookstore has kindly agreed to carry copies of the AMUG newsletter, and
our President Michael Bean is helping us form the group.

 I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, or ideas!  Right now I am
thinking of a first meeting special topic.  One topic I thought may be
appealing to many students would perhaps be a session on how to make all
those papers we turn in look even better. Every student at ASU has access
to a mac and a laser writer at various campus sites, with every site
equipped with  programs such as Word 4.0, Quark Xpress, Superpaint,
Professional Composer, etc.  Any of you in the DTP arena would be helpful
in this area!

I some how don't think Apple would go with the Intel RISC Chip. As to using
an 88000 CPU for the Mac, quite likely but I don't think they would remain
calling
the Machine Macintosh. They might offer some emulation to go back to the Mac
Though.

Well, you'd reckon they'd use Motorola RISC's, Mate ... but I wouldn't count
on it. Trouble with the Motorola RISC is that it's been installed in virtually
no major hardware platforms so far ... and the Intel unit has.

And yeah, if they do get one on the market they'll have to software emulate
the Mac to take advantage of the installed base of software. Not to do so would
be nuts.

Well, I won't say that Apple will be using either chips. Chances are they are
heading towards the RISC technology. It is too early to say which one they will
use until the reveal of the '040 Mac hopefully at the end of the year.

I think you'll be surprised at how much some operations on the LC improve with
MMInit installed. (Same goes for the IIsi, IIci and the IIfx ... in fact any
Mac with the 512K ROM's and 32 bit addressing) Give me some before and after
stats for specific applications when you get back to me ... I'd be interested
to see how much improvement you get.

I'm very interested in that unit. The rumour is that it's gonna be a tower
configuration.
Wonder what sort of performance Apple will build into it. (It'll have to blow
away the NEXT and compete on level ground with Sun SParc performance to cause
more than a ripple in the market .... either that, or be very aggresively
priced.)

True .. but it was a hell of a lot easier there. Similar CPU, same addressing,
same Toolbox implemented in the ROM ... porting software under those conditions
is easy compared towhat they'll have to do with a RISC CPU. (Remember they'll
have to implement every 680x0 instruction, the 680x0 architecture and most of
the busing and Memory management characteristics ... as well as aspects of the
Mac's ROM's ... in a simple INIT like program.) That's a tall order!

So far (after about 24 hours, that is) most applications seems to be working
fine with MMInit. No crashes whatsoever. At this stage I can't really tell if
there's any improvements, performance wise. I'll keep you posted.
   How long have you been using MMInit yourself? And is it doing wonders on
your machine?

It's heaps faster on graphics applications, and in general use. The screen
buffers
tend to operate faster as well, and there are less overheads and delays in most
applications. In general my LC is a whole new machine.
I've been using it for about a month or so ... and have been real impressed.

How do you like your LC?

The time has come.  I always use machines provided by my employer, but now
they've
come out with a really attractive employee purchase offer, so I'm seriously
considering buying my own computer.  Gasp.  Shock.  Horror.

I normally use a IIcx, but don't really want to go the necessary $ for a ci.
 I've looked at the si, but if I'm going to pay that much, I may as well spend
the extra bucks and go for a ci.

That leaves the LC.  So...LC owners:  how do you like your machine?  How's the
performance in the real world?  I don't do anything fancy: simple spreadsheets
(Excel), simple wordprocessing (Word), occassional presentation development
(Canvas and Powerpoint).  Play a few games.  Dial a BBS or two.  That's about
it.

Do you feel that the 68020 offers adequate performance for general use?  What's
your opinion on the inability to have a PMMU for System 7 virtual memory?  Any
other pluses or minuses?

The configuration I'm considering is:

IILC 4 meg
VRAM set
Apple 13" Monitor (or equivalent) (I've heard that the 12" has
  poor resolution.  Opinions on this?
Internal 80 meg
External 105 meg

Any thoughts, comments, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

System 7 Questions
I was under the impression that comments entered in the Get Info box would
be saved when the desktop was rebuilt under System 7. I almost rebuilt the
desktop of my hard disk until I saw the message that all comments would be
lost. Did I dream that feature?
Also, the set of disks for System 7 from Apple contains a system extension
titled 'A/ROSE'. There is not explanation of what this thing does. Does
anyone have an explanation?

The SE to SE30 upgrade, including the new front to your case is $799 at
Computers
Plus Co, 44th St and Oak.  Cheaper than any decent accelerator.  BTW he is the
biggest advertiser in our AMUG News..........

Are you looking for versions of that program specifically, or any public
domain/shareware
INIT manager?  If the latter, the best seems to be INIT Cdev 3.0, which is in
Library disk 142, or Best of CDEV/Init I disk.  It is a "Freeware" program as
I recall.

With the '040 chip, the NeXT is said to be pleny fast. BYTE says that it's about
the fastest thing you can get for the money 10,000-12,000 range.

Within FidoNet, if you select reply, you will reach (hopefully) the person that
you intended to. (Note that I am from Tucson and others are from Australia!).

As far as E-mail goes, on FidoNet, that is up to the Sysop as I understand that
it might take a seperate phone call to send a message.

The situation is worse when you enter the world of USENET and have to address
things to interesting places like "[e-mail]" and such via Uucp (don't
ask as I don't really know: something like Unix to Unix Communication Program),
but at least E-mail is allowed with no extra cost.

Would probably be cheaper to include a 68030 chip to handle the Mac stuff, maybe
even unload the graphics onto the RISC. On the otherhand, they may well keep
the QuickDraw the same on both, and use the '030 chip to handle graphics,
period.

Friday's (6/7/91) Wall Street Journal has an interesting article about talks
between Apple and IBM.

Apple is looking at IBM's RISC chip used in their RS 6000 workstation. Apple
is afraid Motorola will again have trouble shipping a new chip on time.
Motorola
claims the 88110 is on schedule for release later this year.

IBM may want some of Apple's software technology for use in OS/2. It could be
IBM & Apple united against the big bad wolf--otherwise known as Bill Gates.

Apple is now shipping Mac's with IBM made hard drives.

Claris is once again said to be producing software for Windows and OS/2. (I
hope one of the programs is HyperCard.)

Apple has been a wild card in the RISC wars because it is the only big computer
company that has yet to decide on a RISC chip.

Apple is working on large high end computers for back office functions. (Minis
and/or main frames.)

DANGER!!!!

Numerous posts from Apple engineers warn that MMinit was an experiment that
somehow got out of Apple.  MMinit causes more problems than it fixes.  It fixes
one problem with on particular program (I don't remember what it was but it
was obscure) and can cause problems with others.  In most cases it does
absolutely
nothing.

The rare bug it was supposed to fix has been fixed in system 7

Before you buy this combination make sure you try your software on it.  The
LC can be VERY SLOW when used with a monitor larger than the large pixel 12"
that it was designed for.  The 12" monitor has the same number of pixels in
width as the +, classic and SE and more in the vertical direction.

In many color applications the LC just doesn't have the horsepower to update
the 13" screen in a reasonable amount of time.

More than 8 Megs ???

How do you get an SE30 with more than 8 megs of memory to recognize the
additional
memory with System 7.0 ???  It behaves just like with System 6.x by giving the
System all the memory it meeds and reporting it as that plus the over 8 meg
memory, ie System 11252 reported with 16 megs of RAM and System 7.0

There is a copy of MMInit & Software FPU v2.0 in the Public Files A Area. The
utilities are here to assist the LC without a co-processor. These files are
found in the Cdev/Init's Folder. For more up to date software, I have set up
another folder in the Other Conference volume. The folder paths you should look
into are:

 Other Conference: FidoNet MacConference: ACS Echos: Com.Bin.Mac & Digest

There, you would find the latest stuff which I have extracted off Internet
including
a copy of Software FPU which is System 7.0 compatiable. Enjoy.

Not really. There are some companies who are selling Mac emulators for the Sun
& NEXT. A dos emulator is being reviewed in US MacWorld.

The next Mac would certainly Not be using a true RISC CPU. '040 do have some
characteristic of a RISC CPU.

How do you like your LC?

Ralph, remember that the LC's data buss is set to 16 bits.
this may cramp the overall functionality & performance of the LC as time goes
on.
You are wise to look at the 13 inch monitor as the 12 inch is hard to look at
for any length of time, go & work with the 12 inch monitor for an hour or so
& see what I mean.

How do you like your LC?

My God for someone who claims to just use it for simple spreadsheets, simple
word processing, etc. you seem tohave enough hard drive equipment to make the
average user go green with envy (and that most assuredly includes me suffering
by with a simple 40 meg internal)! I am sure that Frank O'Connor will give you
a detailed rundown of the LC as he published a lengthy article on it in the
AUSOM newsletter.
Your memory capacity prompted me to reply and your mention of Canvas. We also
use Canvas 2.0 at school but see that the suggestion now is the need for Canvas
3.0 to be compatible with System 7.0.

How do you like your LC?

I like mine, Ace - it's about three times faster than my old SE on most tasks,
and provides a much higher degree of utility. The 68020 operates at the same
speed as a 68030, without the advantage of Paged Memory (which I consider
dubious
at best) I don't need virtual memory at present, and given that the LC can be
expanded to 10 Mbyte can't see any reason for it. (VM suffers from being HD
based ... and is therefore as slow as your HD and almost 4 times slower than
conventional RAM)
I've got a monochrome LC - cos I wanted the resolution without the colour
overheads.
(I use mine mainly for writing) If you're gonna go colour it depends what you
want. (Apple offers low res and maximum colours on the 12 inch screen and higher
res and 256 colours on the 13 inch screen. VGA monitors can be adapted, so you
do have a choice outside Apple.)
If you do get an LC install the Memory Manager Init I've been talking about
in previous messages. (It counteracts bugs in the ROM's of the LC, Mac IIsi,
ci & fx... which can make even the fx run slower than a cx!)
As for performance ... the LC has faster SCSI than the Mac IIcx, but slower
RAM based operation.(About 25% slower). In the real world I get equivelant
performance
to a Mac IIcx ... which aint bad.

Zterm Sounds

Has Anyone else noticed that the sounds which you can use with Zterm :"Welcome,
Files Done" do not work with Telefinder. I know this is not of world shaking
significance but though I would double check just to make sure it wasn't only
me with this problem.

Is there such a thing as a Freeware or Shareware font made up of  Mathematics
Symbols, etc. I thought I had seen one somewhere once but can't track it down.

I'm thinking about the extra disc as my work cx has an 80.  I find myself
forever
hiding things off on floppy.  I guess I do simple things but in great volume.

Latest Files

Dear MacContent Users,

Due to Telefinder's difficulty with GetInfo information in uploaded archives
(i.e. SIT, CPT, etc.) I've added a folder to Public Files A called Latest
Additions.

When new files are received, they are checked with SAM and Disinfectant and
then filed in their appropriate folders.  As each batch is processed, a document
is placed in Latest Additions describing each file.

You may wish to look there first to see the latest on MacContent.

Alternatively, holding down the option key when clicking on a file folder will
display only files added since your last logon.

If you're talking the TeleFinder software ... yeah that package merely installed
the sounds into ZTerm. If you're talking using ZTerm to connect to TeleFinder,
it must be the different modem strings TeleFinder uses on connect ... but you'd
think they'd be the same as for a normal TTY.

modem communication software
Does anyone know of inexpensive communication software that allows one
to echo the contents that appear to the screen directly to the printer.
The only programs I know off that allows this is red ryder (white knight),
and mcknwoledge.  I don't need anything that powerfull.  It would be nice
if Freeterm has that feature, but I don't think it does.  There are
several individuals that are looking for this type of software
to replace their dumb terminals that allow to dump what's on the screen to
the printer.

Hi Matt.  If you don't mind I am replying in the clear since (frankly) I'm not
sure how to send net mail to your point (although Mike could tell me, I'm sure).

Anyhow, the software allows multiple tape backups, so you would start a backup
then it would ask for another tape.  I have backed up an 80 MEG drive with it.
 It is a bit slow, but gets there.

Do a review of MODE-32 from Connectix. However most find that little if anything
runs in 32 bit mode.

Laser font or bit-mapped? What kind of math symbols are you looking for?
The Belsley and Bartholomew laser fonts are on the AMUG BBS as
BELSLEY.SIT, and contain some math symbols not found in Symbol. (They have
a nice script l (lower case L) that I sometimes use.)
  For really heavy-duty math papers, almost everyone in the world uses
TeX, which is available on the Mac as TeXtures (commercial) or OzTeX
(public domain). There are over 100 math symbols available in TeX which
are not in the Symbol font.  To learn TeX one would need to buy manuals
and get assistance from others.  The program and font files are huge
(OzTeX takes about 8 meg on my HD).

Excutive summary:

- There really was a problem in the LC, IIsi, IIci, and IIfx.
- System 7.0 fixes the problem.
- The problem affects only 2 or 3 programs. If you aren't running
  them, then you will not see a problem. None of these programs
  are in the "Top 100 Macintosh Programs of All Time".
- DON'T run the init under 7.0, as it will re-introduce bugs that
  7.0 fixes.
- The INIT was written as a test to see if the specific bug in
  question could be fixed. In its current form, it was never
  intended to leave Apple, and was never tested. Although it was
  written by someone at Apple (me), it is in no way approved.

I have just read in the MacWeek No 21 the 040 will be coming out in the Aust.
Spring.
There will be 2 models.
A tower 25-MHz 68040 with ASICs, a higher speed NuBus, on board Ethernet and
Dual SCSI controllers.
There is also a rumor!!! that Apple will plump for the Motorolla 88110 Risc
based chip.

Hi! Finally I've managed to spend some time monitoring my machine with MMInit
installed. It sees that most of the software will generally smoother and faster.
It does as you say, makes the LC looks like a 'whole new machine'. And the good
thing is that it works under System 7.0! I'm comfused about something though:
there's an option under the Memory CDev that lets you switch to 32-bit
addressing.
Isn't that what MMInit is doing? So do I still need MMInit?
    Speaking about System 7.0, I noticed that the whole machine seemed to be
slow down dramatically while running the OS. This happens with or without MMInit
installed. Also, the 32-bit addressing doesn't seem to improve the overall
performance
by much. Is it possible that this is due to the LC not being 'ideal' for using
Sys 7.0? My LC has only 2-meg RAM and a 52-meg harddisk. What do you think?
     And believe it or not, I can't run TeleFinder under System 7! I'm now using
6.0.7. The error given was of 'type 1' and that the application making an
'unexpected
quit' (something like that....) Another encountered such problem before??
